Behind every high-performance RF chamber stands a team of professionals who bring technical knowledge, field adaptability, and total commitment to quality. In this spotlight, we hear from Ricardo F., a Crew Leader at Phoenix Group with over four years of experience building shielded environments across the U.S.
In his own words, Ricardo reflects on his journey into the world of RF shielding, the challenges he's faced on site, and the pride that comes from knowing his work contributes to mission-critical technology worldwide.
When Ricardo arrived in the U.S. in 2019, he had never heard of an RF shielded room. A short-term job in California introduced him to the concept — and to João, now a colleague and longtime friend. After returning to Texas and some time away from the industry, fate brought them back together. João offered him an opportunity at Phoenix Group, and Ricardo has been with us ever since.
According to Ricardo, every phase of chamber construction has its own level of meticulousness. From the leveling of concrete floors to the correct torque of each bolt, no detail can be overlooked. A single measurement error can compromise the entire structure's alignment, making the initial layout one of the most critical parts of the process.
“The keyword is commitment,” Ricardo says. “Not only to the company, but to the mission these chambers support. When you realize that global technological advancement depends on what happens inside these rooms, you give 101%.”
Field conditions often require creative solutions. On a project in Seattle, Ricardo and João had to dismantle and move two small chambers without a full tool set or transportation equipment. Improvising with wood and a skateboard, they built a cart to move heavy panels efficiently and completed the project on time — proving that experience, adaptability, and teamwork can solve even the toughest logistical problems.
Among the many projects he's worked on, one stands out for Ricardo: “They test UAV systems for the military. Knowing that our work helps soldiers return home safely gave me a deep sense of purpose.”
Another unforgettable moment: working in Los Angeles. “It wasn’t the chamber itself that was unique — it was the fact that we were building inside one of the most advanced companies on the planet.”
Ricardo describes the Phoenix Group team as more than coworkers — they’re family. “Working here feels like working inside my own home. These are the people I spend most of my time with in the U.S., and the bond is real.”
He also emphasizes the importance of treating everyone with respect on site — from cleaning staff to project managers. “People wait a long time for these chambers. Our energy and passion inspire others to want to be part of the process.”
Ricardo came from a safety background and had no experience with manual tools before joining Phoenix Group. Today, he not only operates drills, saws, and fastening equipment — he fixes things at home, too. “I learned everything here,” he says. “Now, I can teach others.”
His message to those starting in RF shielding is simple: “Don’t give up.” The job can be physically demanding and subject to delays and changes — but the sense of accomplishment is unmatched. “You’re contributing to human evolution. That’s powerful.”
He believes the most important traits are attitude, proactivity, and a desire to learn. Skills can be taught. Commitment cannot.
Ricardo hopes one day to help build a chamber for NASA. Until then, he’ll keep applying ethics and loyalty to everything he does — values he says define Phoenix Group and guide his daily life.
One final story: After a sprinkler system flooded a nearly complete chamber, the team rallied to rebuild in just a day and a half. “That’s the spirit of Phoenix — one team, one goal, full commitment.”
Ricardo’s story is just one example of the skill, dedication, and human connection behind every project we deliver at Phoenix Group. With professionals like him in the field, we’re proud to build the infrastructure that supports innovation, defense, and connectivity around the world.
